What are To-dos
To-do's let you add a checkbox to items to show that they are tasks or activities to be completed.
Turning a bullet into a to-do makes it easier to identify which items are notes and which items are tasks. This is useful both when using Workflowy by yourself but is especially useful when collaborating with others.
To create a To-do
There are four main ways to create a to-do.
With the bullet menu
Note: Once you start making To-do's, new items you create will automatically be to-do's until you switch to bullet mode.
- Open the bullet menu for the item you want to turn into a to-do
- Select the 'Bullets' dropdown
- Choose 'To-do' from the options
From the menu bar
- Zoom into the item you want to turn into a to-do
- In the menu bar, click the bullet icon (second from the right)
- Select the 'To-do' option
With the slash menu
- Place your cursor on the item you want to turn into a to-do
- Type '/' to bring up the slash menu
- Select the 'To-do' option
Create multiple to-do's
- Select multiple items with your mouse
- Choose 'To-do' from the multi-select menu
To stop creating to-do's or remove a to-do
Once you're in the to-do creation mode, you can use either the bullet menu or the slash command to stop creating to-do's.
If you're using the bullet menu for example:
- Open the bullet menu for the item you want to remove the to-do from
- Select the 'To-do' option
- Choose 'Bullets' from the options
Now when you create a new item, it should be a regular bullet.
Hide or show the bullets next to to-do's
You can choose to display or hide the bullet next to to-do's.
- Open the settings menu
- Scroll down to the toggle that reads 'Show bullets for todos and items with children'
- Toggle this option on or off depending on your preference
- Reload Workflowy

Thank you—love it! I had been using the 🔲 emoji.
Muy bueno !!!! Gracias 🚀
Nice feature!
Now, to be really really useful the to-do bullets could be searchable.
Simply add this option to the is: search operator
That would bring the users multiple options! An a simple but powerful way to manage tasks.
Love it. Very, very useful.
Amazing, but we now need a way to filter these.
As adri suggested, something like is:to-do would be perfect.
awesome!!!!!!!!
so I created a search: is:todo today
How do I search for things after today (future), and before today (past due)?
Trying to get back into WorkFlowy for business use cases, and I’d forgotten both how powerful it is. Lots of new features in the past while - thank you for developing this further.
Biggest question: how can I filter, search, or automate todos such that:
- Todo completion is tallied somewhere in the WorkFlowy
- Todo completion triggers an automated copy the todo and insert it into another nest
So that I don’t have to copy & paste todos all the time?
Thanks.
