As a WorkFlowy power user for almost 10 years, in love with its simplicity and minimalist manifesto from theold days, I must admit that I will never use for example the new fancy features of adding colours or emoji tags that clutter all the beauty of a plain-text black-and-white minimal outline. Yes, I know I’m weird, don’t hate me, I still love flat black and white icons and Unicode symbols :)
Of course, I know many users love painting everything with colour, and cluttering their spaces with ugly emojis while uglifying beautiful minimal UI with CSS and badly designed fonts, etc :D So I understand the reasons behind focusing on those types of customization features. But in this craze of apps for adding more shining superficial features, I would like to ask for such a basic improvement regarding the simple task that all WorkFlowy users do thousands of times every day without exception: «Collapsing and Expanding nodes».
I think there should be a much quicker way to collapse and uncollapse «all items» and a «set of items until a particular level».
For the first thing (collapse/expand all), it would be amazing to have just a keyboard shortcut to toggle between collapse all/expand all. And also a way to do it really faster than the current procedure if you do it with a trackpad or mouse. I think the current way of double-clicking on the parent item arrow of a bullet is quite cumbersome when you need to quickly toggle between collapse-all and expand-all. If I am not wrong it would require the user to:
- Click on the arrow twice to close the node.
- Once it is closed, click on the arrow twice to expand all.
- Once they are all expanded, click twice again to close the node.
- Once it is closed again, click twice again to expand all.
That makes 8 clicks just for a single toggle between collapse and expand. The other way is going with the mouse to the 3 dots menu, navigate with the mouse all to the end of the list to select «expand all», then again, go with the mouse to the 3 dots, navigate all the way down the list to select «collapse all» and repeat. I also read in the WorkFlowy Zendesk forum that you can expand all via Cmd+DoubleSpace, but that seems not to be working neither on the Mac desktop app nor in Safari nor the iPad. Sorry if I am missing something here, or if there is already another quicker way to achieve this please let me know!
And for the second feature (collapse/expand until a certain level), I found the way that other outliners allow you to expand/collapse all nodes until your desired level by just one click on the vertical line that indicates the nodes hierarchical level, it is intuitive, quick, and super useful. It would be amazing if WorkFlowy could implement something like this, or any other solution to achieve this quicker. I attach a video for demonstration if you don’t know what I am talking about.
PS: Don’t get mad for my silly colour and emoji comments, I know I am in the minority here. For all the latest additions, I am really loving the ones that upgraded the whole outliner structure possibilities, such as mirrors and references! Thanks a lot for that, and regards!
