Adding hyperlinks without using the mouse?

Even though I'm not a hardcore keyboard user, for whatever reason I tend to highlight text using the keyboard (shift + arrow keys). When text is highlighted this way, instead of using the mouse, the formatting/hyperlinking popup toolbar doesn't automatically appear. I'm often adding hyperlinks to text and I can't figure out a way to do this without re-highlighting the text using the mouse. Is there a way to either add a link or trigger that popup toolbar without using the mouse?

  After marking the text in question hit Ctrl+K. That will open the popup.

  Note: when nothing is selected the hotkey will open the global search. This is in Chrome under Win 10.
