Just some thoughts after reading your post JT. It reads a lot like a demand and entitlement, rather than asking a company to consider changing a feature. I understand the dark mode desire. I used it on every app I can myself. That being said you admitted you have no intention of supporting their company, their time and efforts creating a product you use, and place no value on their services. But you are speaking condescendingly at them for not giving you something for free...? I'm hoping it was just unintentionally bad tone in the way you worded your post :-)

Hi Keith.  Thanks for the feedback.  I can see where you are coming from.  I'm fully happy to support products I use.  However, paying $5/mo just to change colors on something is excessive in my opinion.  I don't need anything else the premium option provides.  Would happily pay $2/mo or something more reasonable for just the dark mode.  All I'm saying is that they are actually hurting their user base and likely their revenue with their choice on this feature.  A larger free user base usually leads to a larger paid user base if executed properly.  BTW, I do perceived value research and pricing strategy for a living.  There are several things they aren't executing well on this front to be honest, but I don't want to get into all of that right now.  All I'll say is that they really need to do some perceived value staircases across their competition and then they might realize this probably isn't the wisest choice.  I think most, if not all, of their competition offers a dark mode for free.  It's just considered standard basic design nowadays...

Thanks for reply with more insights! And I would agree. Dark mode is becoming a base feature for more and more apps. I would imagine the Workflowy team is brainstorming how to add more value and features, without adding bloat or damaging the core of Workflowy which is it's simplicity. I've worked in software development, it's a tough gig to figure out where the value is. And where the costs are.

All that being said, we'll see what the Workflowy team says here :-). Thanks for the solid conversation JT! I understand better where you're coming from now!

Hi gentlemen! Thank you for taking the time out to passionately voice your thoughts about WorkFlowy. We do feel loved!

At the moment, we have a select few features that belong to our Pro repertoire... and then we have the free plan – which most users find suits their needs with the amount of free bullets we offer monthly... not needing unlimited bullets... and so we're hoping that some lesser features would prompt support (looking at you dark mode!).

As we move forward with new feature developments that will be rolled out, this may give us more space to adjust what are and aren't Pro vs. Free features. For now (the short term) until we get other significant features out, unfortunately, dark mode, which is important to many folk, will remain a pro feature.

I do know that on iOS, for instance, one can invert the screen colors if you've got the gesture set up. i.e. 3 quick taps on the home button inverts all colors. There may be a similar option on Android. This is a possible workaround to jump into dark mode for WorkFlowy.

More of an abstract thought here... I had to nod my head when I saw the following comment:

"The world is embracing dark mode."

Dark mode is such a meme now, it's funny.

But I agree it should eventually become part of the free package. Only after more features are added to the pro plan, however.

Very much looking forward to these upcoming features, Frank.

KC - Android and Windows 10 already have a night light mode. Not sure on iOS or Mac. But wouldn't it be redundant for the devs here to take time and money to code something the OS already provides? Curious, what use case are you needing it for?

Keith Wilson - I think you misunderstood my suggestion. They are for the original poster, not for developers.

Dark reader on Chrome works pretty nicely if you don't want to pay. It isn't good as native dark mode on workflowy though, so I have workflowy as an exception in dark reader.

What if you made Dark Mode free for those who refer users to WorkFlowy?

Over the years I referred 6+ people directly via your referral program. And god knows how many more via offline conversations… I have more free monthly bullet points than I need. And the dark mode on mobile+desktop is what i need to keep using workflowly.

    p.s.
I'd be happy to pay monthly for premium features, if they actually were useful. But paying for darkmode only feels doesn't make sense. I feel like i'm less of a WF fan now 😕 100% agree with what JT Bowlin said above.

And how about you put all those highly upvoted, not-yet-released features into a Premium plan? (Image and File Attachements, Calendar+Agenda+Dates, API…) Otherwise, if you make them part of your free plan even for a day - it'll be near impossible to take it back. That's what happened with Dark Mode for me. I was lucky to change to it when it was free. Now it's taken back from me and I'm not happy.

Guys, I hope I'm not over stepping by saying this but many of the browsers we use have extensions that will do the job for us.

I have to agree here with the guys begging for dark mode outside of the pro plan. For me personally it's becoming the pivotal feature to keep me in the loop. I'm conscious of living in accordance with my genes as much as possible, and while working looking at a screen after sunset is unavoidable for me during winter, even when you crank up nightshift or f.lux to 11 – having dark mode makes a ton of a difference for my eyes.

Up to this point the discussion was fairly black & white. Dark mode could tickle down to users outside the pro plan, and it wouldn't have to be for free. Offer it as a single feature, one-off purchase on the app store. I bet you could get away with asking sth. like $10 for it. Because that's what I would fork over like

And new features like image/file attachments will surely pull many more for pro plan. At that point I'd be all over pro for $40 /year.

PS: Great job with the board view on iphone app, just found out about that today :)

    Hi Rupert,

For images and file attachments, you just need to activate "WorkFlowy Labs" in your Settings menu and then "File uploads".

trying to read this web page in dark mode, and It does not appear to be supported on this webpage, and the workaround to use reader view also does not appear to be an option - ironic that the discussion about dark mode in the app cannot be accessed in dark mode. :)
