Option to preserve search terms while navigation

One thing I keep wanting is that I've got a search term already typed in, and I want to go up a level in the hierarchy, but preserve that search term.  Of course, I can just Esc + retype as I traverse up.

But it would be nice to be able to Shift-click a breadcrumb to keep the search intact.  Or Alt+Shift+← for keyboard.

  This would be fantastic. A toggle to switch this option on & off would be nice too.
