Code Formatting

    There is a newer competing app – Notion – which has been vying for my attention.  I love the simplicity of Workflowy, but I too use it for software and not having the code block support in Workflowy feature has been a thorn in the side for a while now.  I hope this gets addressed so that I don't have a reason to explore elsewhere.

    Inline and block code formatting is an essential feature to add, please

    This is a very high priority for me as well. I think Dynalist basically gets it right (see below). Having something similar in Workflowy would be really helpful.

    Came here to vote for this. It's always a pain trying to save code snippet.

    Hi guys,

    Yes... we do have eyeballs here :-). We have this on our own wish list, which is different to what we've planned for the next sprints... but we recognize this would fulfill a need!

    @Gene,

    > Thanks for the news that feature requests here are not as important.

    Quite the opposite. 100% of feature requests are logged on an internal board – whether they are from the forum, twitter, the Slack group or the help desk. I simply clarified that requests here are not the sum total and thus it cannot be assumed that if a request is the top request in the forum that it is necessarily the top feature request in general.

    You're speaking to someone who advocates for this very feature. And the team in general would love to build everything all at once, however, most of our team resides in the Ukraine and are thus beset with extenuating circumstances that do no allow us to do so.

    > help desk: I would not have thought to clutter that with feature requests. Good to know you prioritize that above the forums

    I think there are a lot of assumptions here. There is one person who gets their eyes on all incoming communication. Just one person. And that person is myself. I look at all requests every day and log them. There is no prioritizing one channel above another. ALL requests are logged and looked at as a whole.

    Let me shout it from the rooftops: WE WOULD GENUINELY LOVE TO HAVE CODE BLOCKS AND RECOGNIZE THE NEED! However, we cannot commit to a time frame.

    Doubling down on the above sentiment. I love workflowy but the frustration of working with code snippets is real.

    I would also love this. I prefer using WorkFlowy over Notion, but not being able to have inline and code block formatting is getting increasingly frustrating.

    Also, the ability to set monospaced font in only just some selected bullets would be quite useful

    especially when imputing numbers, prices, dates, article codes, etc.

    In this regard, I believe this other feature request is related to this one:

    Hi @matrello,

    This is a rather common request. Code formatting. We'd love to implement!

    Thanks for the news that feature requests here are not as important. Would be nice to have a single feature request location so that users could vote in a consistent manner, or even know which avenue “counts”. That is pretty common for apps with active user bases. To be clear IMHO:

    • Slack: requires a total commitment to follow in any way and is a waste of time for someone who wants a tool to use not a hobby to follow. If that is the main source of feature requests it is not surprising that collaboration issues are totally dominating your current roadmap.
    • help desk: I would not have thought to clutter that with feature requests. Good to know you prioritize that above the forums
    • Twitter: is a narcissist’s s*&thole that I will not swim in for any tool or product. If I have to go there in order to interact with a you it is not going to happen.

    Code blocks are a super basic functionality for any product of this type. It doesn’t matter if I can collaborate with a team if it is impossible to use equations (LaTex) or share/post code.

    Hello,

    This feature would be very useful. We are hesitating to deploy other tools on our team to manage our technical documentation and having this feature would help us decide to manage our documentation on Workflowy.

    While waiting for the deployment of this feature, it seems possible to use custom CSS with Workflowy paragraphs. If anyone has already implemented this, we would love to hear their feedback.

    Three years and still no way to make code blocks?  Really?  All the advanced features are great, but losing sight of the basics is a killer.

    Markdown is great, but the core need here is the ability to copy/paste large (block) and small (inline) sections of code, somehow.

    My whole professional life is in WorkFlowy, apart from all-important code snippets (with basic layout). They are so essential to me, that the lack of this feature keeps forcing me at least partially back to applications like Notion and Walling, breaking my workflow(y). This is really a major limitation for so many of your professional users, as the previous comments have shown. Dear team, you've done such a brilliant job so far, could you please make this one of your top priorities?

    One more vote for code insertion.  I don't want you to format it, that's VSCode's job.  But a way to paste my code snippets in and have them not lose line breaks, or force create tags via # or @ is really needed.   You don't have to replicate lots of other folks' software, just let us paste a section as "not counting" where workflowy's tracking is concerned, especially if it's pasted into a note.

    Bump!!! Using the comments is survivable, but by no means is it a full solution Interested to see what you guys come up with to solve the issue. I know the focus is on the Teams functionality and support (assumption based on the roadmap), but no team that codes is going to even look at workflowy if it doesn't have code formatting.

    Dropping a comment so Workflowy knows that people are still interested in this feature.

    I have developer friends who think that not being able to format as code is a deal breaker.
    So many people have seen me using workflowy and they said the same thing, "no code format, don't wanna use it". To be honest, I've considered switching to notion (like my other developer friends and colleagues) but I've been using workflowy for a while it's annoying to migrate notes. If you keep ignoring important requests like this, even users like me would migrate one day.

    You've been adding lots of features lately but honestly, this is the most important.
    Why do we have random formats like paragraph but not code??? Who actually uses 'paragraph'?

    I would also *really* like to get this feature! Code snippets are a huge part of many users' daily workflow and the fact that we dont have syntax highlighting is a huge issue.

    Code blocks and code highlighting would be a godsend.

    Something like

    ```javascript
    insert code here
    ```

    Would be perfect.

    +1 for this. I've come over from Notion and love the app but will be forced to jump ship back if the team don't intend on implementing this any time soon. @Alessandro, do you have an ETA that you'd like to aim for?

    I'm surprised that this isn't a core feature.

    @Alessandro, do you have an ETA that you'd like to aim for?

    I am just a user, like you, so I don't have any particular insight. However, Jesse mentioned the following on Slack, about a month ago:

    It is absolutely 100% planned. It’s really blocked only by an extension system for textual entities, which we’ve been working toward. This and many different types of text formatting (you could imagine markdown working the same way it does in slack now, where it gets replaced on the fly)

    So, no ETA, but it's planned. (And about the lack of an ETA, it might be better this way: as much as I'd like to have this feature, I'm willing to wait a bit longer if the WorkFlowy team needs more time to implement the underlying infrastructure so it can handle other similar cases, to improve on a recently released feature, or deal with some other priorities.)

    Hi Christopher!

    In the meantime, you could paste your code into WorkFlowy notes... to move into a bullet's note, just hit Shift+Enter.

    Long-term WorkFlowy Pro member here, this is my #1 feature I'm waiting for also as I'm forced to use other apps which support code highlighting for these snippets.
