Downvoted because there is a number of third party applications both for Windows and Mac that allow for keyboard macros

I upvoted because you can not assume your users have the patience, ability or willing to install third -party applications to support timestamp insertion. If workflowy had this kind of feature, it could pull users to WORKFLOWY, not the third-party. That's important.

There may be text expansion tools for windows and mac, but the interface should be the same on mobile too.  Dates are a key part of how many people use Workflowy and there should be a consistent and convenient way to insert them (and filter on ranges of them) without the requirement of a 3rd party tool.

This makes total sense and seems to be an obvious feature.

Upvoted!  I use TextExpander on my Mac, and PhraseExpress on iOS for this purpose.  But it’s annoying and time-consuming in iOS to have to switch keyboards just to do this.  You can use iOS Text Replacement, but you’d have to update the date every day.  iOS lacks a “Today’s Date” feature.  If anyone knows how to do that without 3rd party apps, I’d like to hear.

I'd love this feature.  Would be extra handy if available on the mobile app as well.  I track my time using WorkFlowy all the time but typing the date / time in on mobile becomes tedious.

I'd still love to see this feature. Quickly inserting today's date as a tag would be immensely useful. It's allows you to filter all meeting notes at a node hierarchy level quickly, i.e. in the search bar type "#2019-06". It would be even more useful if you range syntax to specify the search critieria, i.e. "#2019-[01-06]". It would be great when doing your GTD weekly review.

It seems a bit ironic that Workflowy prominently shows dates on their marketing material, but doesn't support quickly adding them to an outline. It feels like this should be a core capability of Workflowy.

What do you think, Workflowy team?

We're heading more in the direction of date stamps (which our search taps into) which can be created by using natural language. We're planning on broadening the date format display options... and conceivably we may include date tags as an option.

I can't understand why a time/date stamp isn't built in. It is absolutely a needed aspect, especially since the app doesn't tap into mac services which can do it fine. is there some major coding challenge here? another thing would be direct access to contacts to pull in phone and email and web info that already exists. like time and date info is always somewhere on a computer. having to type is all again is a PIA and totally unnecessary.

    Hi Jay!

Activate the dates feature in your settings menu... and then you can type any date-related strings or language... and the date helper will pop up. You can also type in "now" to get the current time and date.

    Hi Frank.

I don't see any dates feature in my settings menu. Is it only for the paid version?

Under Experimental Features. Yes, I saw that and have used it to complete dates. I don't see any information about HOW to invoke either TODAY or TIME or TIMESTAMP. The process is to type "Today" then tab for today's date, type any portion of a date format to invoke a particular style, and type "Now" for the time date stamp. On poking around, I find some really great stuff like

    • Wed, Sep 7, 2022 = yesterday+tab
    • Fri, Sep 9, 2022 = tomorrow+tab
    • Thu, Sep 15, 2022 = week+tab
    • Sat, Oct 8, 2022 = month+tab
    • Fri, Sep 8, 2023 = year+tab

    BONUS

works for last week, month, year, too. Amazing and wonderful.

wow. I wish I knew that a year ago. if I missed this lesson somewhere, I'm sorry to bug you. But it wasn't easily apparent. Information is pretty useless if you can't find it. All I'm suggesting is you might make these commands more visible for dummies like me who often type without looking at the screen. Thanks for your patience and this great application I use every day.

    Hi Jay!

Some excellent tinkering on your part :-)

    A couple of extra pointers:

    1. You can also use date ranges by separating two dates by a hyphen (for instance "yesterday - Sunday"
    2. You can use natural language ("5 days ago", "in 27 days", "500 days from now"...
    3. We're coming out with "Dynamic dates" very soon... this will allow you to choose from a variety of date formats. This will work retroactively...

Also we'd like to implement some type of calendar view at some point...

We also have this internally at the moment:

Excellent and very useful for daily work. Don't be shy telling people about this stuff. It's going to sell your product even more better ...

Can you please add this date format, known as ISO-8601: 2022-09-15

Re natural language. What does *not* work as expected, are natural language sequences like "last sunday", "this sunday", and "next sunday", which IMO should represent three consecutive Sundays. Rather, it seems that in practice "last" represents "in the previous complete week", and "this" and  "next" are equivalent, which I think is wrong, so there's no way using day of week to specify any already-passed day in the current week. For example, (today being Tuesday 13 Sept) "last sunday" gives 4 Sept, but "this Sunday" and "next Sunday" both give 18 Sept and there's no to specify 11 Sept  using the word "Sunday" with any modifier.

Date format configuration will be nice.  I use YYYY-MM-DD for everything.  Currently in WF, if for example I'm keeping a project log, I will type 'today' and then hit tab, to insert today's date.

But I would like some kind of timestamp metadata per node, with view options.  For example a toggleable column of timestamps in small grey font, showing date modified etc, or perhaps you can click on a node to see its history.

But maybe all that would risk making Workflowy more complicated than it should be -- feature creep and all that.
