Wassap everybody! This is Jesse. So, I've never given a timeline for this before, but I can commit to having hyperlinks will in Q1, 2020.

Currently we're focused on getting the first version of date support out.

Did this get added in Q1 2020? Just curious if I need to enable something or select a certain setting to allow hyperlinks?

    Hi Michelle,

A lot of unexpected things are happening in Q1 and we're off a tad bit on this one... but we're on target for our "Boards" feature :-)

    Hi Frank,

Any hints on the updated schedule for hyperlinks then?

As a side note, are you planning to support the [[link]] syntax for hyperlinks to other items WITHIN WorkFlowy? I think Dynalist has it this way and it's pretty nice, even though I did not explore it in detail.

Thanks for any answer in advance!

    Hi Anton,

We're planning for backlinks, transclusion, embedded hyperlinks and much, much more. I can't tell you with absolute certainty when embedded links will come out... but they will. Sorry I can't be more specific!

Frank, you've whet my appetite with "backlinks". What is that? Is that like the bi-directional page links in Roam Research? That would be cool, as well as transclusion of course. Roam's page linking features seem very cool, and would be awesome to see in Workflowy. Looking forward to it!

This subset of development is the primary reason I'm still a subscriber and am still telling people to use WorkFlowy.

The immense power of transclusion and linking cannot be overstated.

What do you guys think about the option of opening an iframe on the right side of the list when you click a link (maybe a link with special syntax?) in a node? Like if I have a google spreadsheet with my budget in an embedded link [[My Budget]]. Then, when I click on [[My Budget]] the WorkFlowy website, instead of redirecting me to another tab, simply throws an iframe to the right, condenses my list to the left, and gives me a 50/50 productivity view to work on my budget doc real quick. This could be used as a way to create productivity "flows" (get it? :P).

    First node: [[Calendar]].

    Second node: [[Email]].

    Third node: [[My Budget]]

    Fourth Node: [[Work Website]].

    Last node: Home>Inbox (transcluded node).

So as I work through my daily routine if I see anything I need to toss into my Inbox node I can just chuck it in with no break in flow. Then I can do what I *really* want to do and just live in WorkFlowy.

    Thoughts?

    Edited for grammar and clarity.

    Hi Michael,

Yes... without mentioning the name of one of the latest WorkFlowy clones... this is what we have in mind.

"Are you planning to support the [[link]] syntax for hyperlinks to other items WITHIN WorkFlowy?".

    Absolutely +1

This doesn't seem to be such a complex feature to implement and would completely change the game for how we use WorkFlowy. If we can access the same bullet point from different places of our data structure, that would allow us to work with WF more as our brain does. By interconnecting ideas and reaching to them from different branches of the organizational tree and not only having them archived in a hierarchy structure.

    Hi Max,

You can do this already by copying the link for a bullet in its option menu (or from the URL bar). Embedded links would just be more polished.

Here's a nice option for now, thanks to @rawbytz:

    Hi Frank,

    Thanks for answering.

I think I heard about those options before in a thread requesting for "aliases" in WorkFlowy.

The thing with the @rawbytz extensions for Chrome is that I use the WorkFlowy desktop version for Mac. I don't use it on the web as my browser is usually too populated with many tabs and pages. So using the WF app is a rather more functional and clean experience for me.

And yes, being able to see something as:

        Job

in our WF structure would be so much understandable and easier to the eyes than seeing something as:

         https://workflowy.com/s/FUPo.NIJFCnvdda#/db66fb1be1e9

that one would even use the URL links as aliases ;)

PS: See that you can click both links here above. The word  "Job"  and also the "https://workflowy.com/s/FUPo.NIJFCnvdda#/db66fb1be1e9" url both taking you to the same node in WorkFlow.

Only one is neat and functional while the other is awfully cluttering and you don't know where you will go.

Hi Max! Totally agreed! We're going to be building "embedded links" into WorkFlowy soon :-)

AM I DREAMING OR IS THIS NOW AVAILABLE?!  IT LOOKS LIKE I CAN RENAME HYPERLINK TEXT!!!!

Something like this is EXACTLY what I was wanting; something that doesn't break WYSIWYG. I'm so happy! (but also still a bit unsure if I should be in case I'm just dreaming.)

Thank you for this! I might just have to sign up for a subscription...

Indeed it works. However, don't touch it with the mobile version -- the link will disappear. WIP.

Write or paste the link, add a space ( to make it active ) and then edit it on the fly:

    • Position the cursor either after the first or before the last character of the link,
    • select / delete the "rest" of the link,
    • rename it,
    • delete the first or the last character.

Just a small upgrade that makes all our organizational system sooooooo much minimal, elegant and useful!!!!

Both, "boards" and "editable hyperlinks" are game-changers new features.

And the good news is that this "hyperlink" ability will make the all-time popular "aliases" request and some other compound advantages become possible very soon!

    :)

    Thanks a lot!!

    Hi guys,

Indeed, this is the beginning of embedded hyperlinks... and will be polished to a shine. We're probably going to switch over to the regular modal popup that allows one to replace the link with text... also, we're going to be implementing cross linking (bidirectional links), automatic link replacement (link > list title text when pasting internal links)... this is all in the works... and more.

    Frank,

    Thanks for the update!

May I only ask you to keep the original URL searchable even after it was replaced by a text?

This would allow to find something quickly if you only remember part of URL which happens often.

    All the best.

Is the way Stefano suggested the intended way to do it or there is a way to do it with markup?

@Meir G.: It is not the intended way -- Frank stated that "... [ WorkFlowy is ] probably going to switch over to the regular modal popup that allows one to replace the link with text ...".

We should really just stand by and let them work on it a while. It's exciting to see early signs of progress, but it's clearly a WIP.

We have Anatoliy dedicated to fleshing this out... and it's happening as we speak (embedded links and bidirectional links). We're taking notes from a certain WorkFlowy clone...

I think if one were to start rewatching the TV series, LOST... and watch one a day until you're done... we should have this all in place by the time you're done.

Then again... it could happen a lot sooner.

This is super exciting, Frank! I've been playing around with Roam recently (I believe this is the clone you're talking about). While the bidirectional linking is cool and something I've been impressed with, I'm also a much bigger fan of almost everything else about Workflowy and can't see myself switching, especially if some of the features are coming to Workflowy. Thanks again for all the hard work!

I love the way hyperlinks can be more easily renamed now, using the link button that appears when hovering the mouse over a link that has been pasted or typed.

However, I often find that I've typed the text first and then find the URL and want to convert part of the existing text to a hyperlink. Would you be able to make the link button also appear when plain selected text is pointed at? That way, I could type my sentence, select the bit I want hyperlinked, click the button and paste the URL into the dialog box.
