Numbering and Sorting

We've had many requests for the ability to number and/or sort list items.  Something that we're definitely planning.

This would be a tremendously useful feature, especially if implemented similar to the note feature.

I agree - I would very much like to be able to sort level X of a subtree alphabetically. Another idea - abilty to create an inverted tree by tag. (pick a subtree, choose "Duplicate and arrange by tag" and create a 3-level tree: a) root, b) each tag found in the selection, c) a copy of each node in the original selection that had the specific tag. There would be duplicates, but that's why it would be a copy. (This would be incredibly useful for my situation - I'm rearranging a website content inventory, and would love to automatically create a topic-oriented tree based on my tagging…)

Two years later, I don't see a sort feature. Is this still in the planning stages or what? Is workflowy still under active development?

Workflowy has a 2-person development team (the founders, Mike and Jesse). Features are worked on by priority. Sorting is still planned, but we cannot offer any timeline. I do suggest reading a current interview with Mike and Jesse posted on the blog to get some insight into the company and future vision.

A workaround for sort is via an external program.
    Use export function as follows

    • In Workflowy hover with mouse over bullet for action menu
    • Chose Export (formatted, plain text or OPML, which is best may depend on external program)
    • Copy / paste e.g. into external program e.g. OpenOffice Writer
    • Sort (for OO Writer choose Tools, then Sort)
    • Copy / paste sorted list back into Workflowy

Unfortunately bold/italic/underline markup gets lost via this route.

Thanks for the update. I'm researching list managers right now, but I'm still pretty wary from way back when Zenbe Lists went dark & I lost dozens & dozens of lists all at once ... it felt like brain damage! So I'm being very careful about what list manager I may choose to adopt this time. It's good know workflowy has a user & developer community that cares! (And an export function.)

Yeah, import and export is a huge benefit. It allows migrating from/to another tool.Especially which OPML format, which many tools support.

It even allows generating lists externally. I experimented with generating a complex quick-ref OPML file in Excel, then copying it into Workflowy, which worked. But the Excel spreadsheet was dauntingly complex for my use case, and the result suboptimal for viewing on a small screen.

Caveat: for my case the Excel part became dauntingly complex (there are certainly easier ways to generate OPML)

I finally ended up generating a wiki version instead (with richer layout).

Ummmm ... had wanted to create an RFE ... not sure this fits as a comment.

But this came to mind while going through the intro: "How to do See More / See Less"?

Oh ... just saw the "Suggestion" link.
    cheers

I love workflowy but seems like this numbering is taking a long time is there a Beta program you have the numbering working?

I see other list managers with this feature already see: http://blog.dynalist.io/numbered-lists/

I love Workflowy, but there's no question Dynalist is eating their lunch on features. They're iterating through their roadmap at a rapid clip, and btw the roadmap is there for all the world to see (and vote) on Trello, unlike the opaque sometimes updates of Workflowy. Instead of blog posts and maybes on date support, Dynalist just went and did it, and it's looking great.

Dynalist has had some performance issues, and I consider this their top flaw right now. I also can't really live with some of their remaining issues like inability to have clickable URLs in the item note (after the 1st line). Then there's stupid stuff like hardcoded keyboard shortcuts that can't work on Mac (like Alt-whatever). But they're getting very close, at which point I could certainly see myself jumping ship. Competition is good, and I hope Workflowy is feeling some heat, because I'd rather it improve and not get leapfrogged out of a dogged commitment to minimalism.

Yes! Sorting but in a smart way - hope you find it.

    @Sasha, Any progress with this?

Numbering and Sorting would be very helpful in some cases (provided it does not complicate the Workflowy interface too much, please keep it simple and fast).

I would also appreciate automatic capitalization of first letters in bullets (just like it is possible with PowerPoint bullets), which would make lists look consistent and speed-up when importing or breaking bullets into sub-bullets.

Can you do anything about these things?

I love your product, but I feel like it gets hardly any support. Can you expand your team or sell your company so we can get features (numbering, starred pages on apple devices... etc.)

I think numbering on a list program is simple, basic, and expected.
I don't want calendars, that's not what this software ever promised. It is all about lists though. List should be able to be numbered, lettered, and possible sorted.

Have you taken a survey of what people want? I don't think I've gotten one and I've been waiting for this option literally for YEARS. Please help.

Can you expand your team or sell yourselves so we can get support?

Your date tag which automatically updates with a new request is misleading. It makes it seem like you are actively monitoring and working on this feature when you are not (?).

In worked to keep me from following up about this for the last two years.

Yea, I get the feeling they've sold this company and it has become someone's cash cow now. I mean, it's "good enough" and I subscribe and pay over $150 a year and see no improvements.

Dynalist has this feature and a lot more. It's not as "clean" an interface, but Lord I've wanted this for a while. If I figure out how to export all of my data, I'm gone.

    @LaMont Price,

http://help.dynalist.io/import/ as soon as they get an app. let's bail. they even allow you to import from workflowy so no switching cost.

@LaMont, notice how the response up top automatically updates to whenever the last post was to make it seem they are on top of it... so deceiving.  Note the time of the last post in this thread and note what time Sasha "updates" his response.

    @Tim

They have an app and I'm using Dynalist now (paid) but...the UX still has much to be desired (mobile & web).

The app loads very slow mainly due to me having a gagillion items imported from Workflowy. Support did say they are working on it and I have no doubt that they are.

Dynalist destroys Workflowy in almost every point of comparison except the UX and UI. Which currently keeps my paid Workflowy account by the skin of their skin...for now.

Almost my entire team at work had pro accounts with WF, but now, all of us are looking at Dynalist due to their transparent development and rapid feature roll-out. I kept my WF pro account one more year to see if what happens with the date feature.   I love WF, and want to remain loyal, but this is getting a bit silly.

I get it that WF is a small shop, but so is Dynalist and Checkvist (Moo.do can't be that much bigger, either) and they're crushing it.  WF's updates seemingly center around ambiguous carrot dangles ("we can't give you a timeline on this cool new feature that we've been talking about for two years") and reliance on Frank's new ways to skin the same cat. Frustrating.

edit:  I don't want to be a jerk here - WF has the superior UI and its elegance is unmatched.  Frank has been infinitely helpful over the years, and Jesse, Mike, and Sasha all seem like cool guys.  I'm just worried their hard work is going to get eclipsed if they don't get going faster.

I add my voice to the chorus.  Two years of "we'll get to it when we can" gets tiring.

    On a similar note:

It would be really nice to treat Workflowy "lines" as "items" that can be dragged and dropped anywhere.

    For example:

I organize my workflowy such, with sub-categories underneath.

    1. Inbox

         a. Example Item

    2. Work-related

         a. Urgent-Important

              1. Example Item

         b. Non-urgent important

    3. Non work-related

    4. Errands

It would be really nice to be able to add an item in the inbox ("Example Item"), and then drag-and-drop into, let's say, "Work-related, Urgent important." But, because this destination area is not at the same level as "Inbox" it doesn't place it under "Urgent-important" but rather under "Work-related".
